Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestling star Matt Riddle has hinted at a potential return to mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2024. At 37 years old, Riddle is considering stepping back into the ring or cage after a successful stint in the world of professional wrestling.
Ongoing Discussions with Fight Promotions
Riddle has been in talks with various fight promotions, though he remains tight-lipped about the specifics. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," Riddle disclosed to MMA Junkie. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon." The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that among the interested parties are bare-knuckle fighting organizations and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
Riddle's MMA Background
Riddle's last foray into MMA was in February 2014, where he faced off against Michael Kuiper under the Titan FC banner. Prior to that, he had a noteworthy tenure in the UFC, exiting the promotion on a four-win streak after a bout with Che Mills in 2013. However, two of those victories were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, leading to his controversial departure from the UFC.
The UFC's president, Dana White, did not hold back his criticism when Riddle left, but this only added to Riddle's notoriety. Reflecting on the incident, Riddle expressed gratitude: "I have to thank Dana, because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," he said. This attention, according to Riddle, helped him shape his 'bro' character, which resonated with fans who had experienced similar criticism from authority figures.
Transition to Professional Wrestling
After leaving MMA, Riddle quickly transitioned to professional wrestling, starting his training in 2014 and making his debut in 2015. He made waves on the independent circuit, capturing several titles before being signed by WWE NXT in 2018. There, he found success as one half of the NXT Tag Team Champions alongside Pete Dunne.
Riddle's momentum continued as he ascended to WWE's main roster, clinching the United States Championship in February 2021. His charisma and in-ring prowess led to the formation of the tag team "RK-Bro" with veteran superstar Randy Orton. Together, they secured the Raw Tag Team Championship on two occasions.
Staying Combat-Ready
Despite his wrestling schedule, Riddle maintains his combat skills, practicing martial arts multiple times a week. His dedication to the craft is evident in his attainment of a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, a rank that signifies a high level of proficiency in one of the most critical disciplines in MMA.
Riddle's presence at high-profile combat sports events, such as the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, further fuels speculation about his return to fighting. It appears he never strayed far from the fight community, keeping his connections—and options—open.
Looking Ahead
As for his future in combat sports, Riddle keeps an open mind and bears no ill will towards his past affiliations. "I never say never," he stated. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge." He reminisces about his time in the UFC with a sense of unfinished business: "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he reflected.
Riddle acknowledges the allure of professional wrestling but also confesses a lingering desire to compete in MMA: "Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
Currently a free agent in the wrestling world, Riddle's potential pivot back to MMA is a topic of intrigue and anticipation among fight fans. Whether he returns to the cage or continues to entertain in the squared circle, Riddle's athletic journey remains one to watch.
