In a strategic move aimed at enhancing accessibility for their fanbase, the Anaheim Ducks have announced a significant overhaul of their local game broadcasts. The NHL franchise is shifting its broadcast strategy to a combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional over-the-air broadcasts, a change expected to bring Ducks games to a broader audience without any cost to viewers.
This transition will see 65 of the Ducks' games next season broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles, specifically Channel 13. In addition, all games will be available regionally via the Victory+ streaming service, an initiative launched to offer free, ad-supported streaming. The Victory+ app will be downloadable on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting in September.
A Move to Increase Accessibility
The decision to diversify the broadcast platforms comes as part of a broader effort to enhance fan engagement and accessibility. According to Ducks president Aaron Teats, “We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge.” He further added, “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market, and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms.”
The Ducks’ regional territory spans a broad swath of Southern California, including Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii. The expanded accessibility aims to cater to this diverse and geographically widespread fanbase.
New Partnerships and Legacy Broadcasters
This pivot in broadcasting tactics follows the expiration of the Ducks' contract with their former broadcaster, Diamond Sports Group, at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group is currently embroiled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, which may have influenced the Ducks' decision to seek new opportunities.
In their new broadcasting arrangement, the Ducks have partnered with A Parent Media. Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, explained the significance of this collaboration, saying, "The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” The synergy between the two entities is expected to bolster the production and distribution quality of Ducks’ game broadcasts.
Notably, fans will still get to enjoy the familiar voices of Brian Hayward and John Ahlers, who will remain as part of the Ducks' broadcast team. Their continued presence ensures a sense of continuity and familiarity for long-time viewers.
A Broad Trend in Sports Broadcasting
The move by the Ducks is part of a broader trend in the sports broadcasting arena, where teams are increasingly exploring direct-to-consumer streaming options. The Florida Panthers are another example, having moved their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports. Additionally, the Dallas Stars plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+, further underscoring the industry’s shift toward accessible and innovative broadcasting solutions.
Despite its financial troubles and diminishing role with the Ducks, Diamond Sports Group continues to play a significant part in NHL broadcasting. The company will carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and has existing agreements with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
For the Ducks, the current broadcasting strategy is more than just a logistical reshuffling. It represents a tailored effort to fortify the bond between the team and its supporters. As Ducks fans prepare for the upcoming season, they can look forward to a more accessible and engaging way to follow their team’s journey, free of charge.
With innovative solutions like Victory+ and an over-the-air presence on Channel 13, the Ducks are positioning themselves at the forefront of a new era in sports broadcasting, ensuring that every fan, regardless of their location within the expansive regional territory, remains connected to the action on the ice.
