Steelers' Receiving Corps Strives to Convert Criticism into Success
The Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receiver group has found itself under the microscope lately, facing pointed criticisms about their performance. Amid this scrutiny, the players have remained focused, channeling the skepticism into motivation as they look to prove their doubters wrong.
"We don't talk about it openly, but ... we're all human. We hear the talk and stuff," said Calvin Austin III, one of the promising talents within the Steelers' receiving unit. "As players and competitors, we don't need any more motivation. ... But that extra stuff is a little, you know, we're competitors at the end of the day. So it's like OK, doubt me. Cool, we'll see."
While discussions outside the team indicate a search for new talent to bolster the receiving corps, Steelers' management has been clear on their stance. Contrary to reports, General Manager Omar Khan stated unequivocally that the team is not currently engaging in trade talks for a new wideout.
Among the stars vying for breakthrough success is George Pickens, a player held in high regard for his potential to ascend into the ranks of the league's elite receivers. Pickens has showcased his capabilities, notably turning a short completion from quarterback Justin Fields into a touchdown, illustrating his playmaking prowess.
Yet, it is Calvin Austin III who has drawn considerable attention this season. With only 17 career regular-season catches, his influence on the field might appear limited. However, his electrifying 72-yard touchdown against the Las Vegas Raiders during Week 3 suggests otherwise. Austin has aspirations beyond mere receptions; he aims to make a significant impact on special teams, with ambitions of reaching the Pro Bowl as a returner.
Reflecting on his journey, Austin remarked, "That was definitely one of those moments where it was like, yeah, I'm here. This year, it's just me doing the same thing. Continuing to work, stay humble, trust the process and just let everything fall into place."
Austin's rookie season in 2022 was cut short by injury, yet he delivered a memorable performance by making his first career postseason touchdown catch in the Steelers’ wild card loss to Buffalo. Now healthy, he is poised to make a consistent impact.
Adding new depth to the receiver room is Van Jefferson, a recent acquisition and Super Bowl champion with the Rams in 2021. Despite a lackluster season last year, Jefferson's championship experience provides a veteran presence. He aims to rebound from a season where he caught less than half of his targets and did not find the end zone.

"Anything you have a new quarterback, it’s going to take time to build that chemistry. But the quarterbacks have been so up-front and forthcoming in trying to build that chemistry," explained Austin. "We trained out in San Diego with Russ a couple times and just continuing to build chemistry and those little things that coaches can't do for the players."
Russell Wilson, a seasoned Super Bowl-winning quarterback, has brought his vast experience to the Steelers. Austin has nothing but praise for the veteran, noting his positive influence on the team.
"It's amazing. Obviously, somebody my age, you've seen him in the Super Bowl and has been the quarterback for some legendary teams. It's almost surreal at first. ... Russ doesn't wanna do anything but to help the team and for our personal growth, too. He's been to the top, won a Super Bowl. He's pushing you to be a better person and player," Austin shared.
