As the Pittsburgh Steelers navigate their preseason schedule, offensive struggles have emerged as a significant concern. In two preseason games, the Steelers' offense has tallied only 15 points, underscoring the extent of the challenges ahead.
Last Saturday’s 9-3 loss highlighted the team’s difficulties. A mere three points of the total 15 were scored while Justin Fields was on the field, hindered by persistent issues in pass protection. Despite five series against the Buffalo Bills, Russell Wilson failed to lead a single scoring drive, suffering three sacks that compounded the woes.
Head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t mince words regarding the situation. "It's somewhat of an incomplete study because you just don't get a chance to see them operate or us operate or us establish rhythm and personality when you're not winning possession downs," Tomlin stated, reflecting on the team's inability to gain offensive momentum.
The first three series of the game were particularly troubling, with the Steelers going three-and-out each time. "The first three or so series of the game, it was three and out, and you're not going to get an opportunity to establish rhythm or play the way you'd like as an individual or a collective," Tomlin continued, pinpointing a core issue that stifled offensive flow.
Troubles in Pass Protection
Tomlin stressed the need for improved pass protection, a fundamental aspect that’s proving detrimental. "We've got to do a better job in pass protection than we did—not only in possession downs but just in general," he emphasized, underscoring that this is a non-negotiable requirement for successful offensive play.
Compounding the problem, Greg Rousseau from the Bills capitalized on the Steelers' inexperience, particularly that of Broderick Jones, who was moved to right tackle for the game. The result was a disrupted offensive line and further struggles for Justin Fields, who was sacked once during the matchup. The protection woes became evident with veteran center/guard Nate Herbig potentially out for the season due to a torn rotator, and rookie first-round pick Troy Fautanu also sidelined with an injury.
Looking Ahead to the Final Preseason Game
With the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions looming, Tomlin’s focus remains fixed on improving the offensive line's performance. The evaluations made in this final game will be crucial as Tomlin decides which quarterback will start for the Steelers, a decision no doubt influenced by the team’s ability to protect its signal-caller and establish any semblance of rhythm on offense.
Ultimately, the Steelers' ability to refine their offensive execution and overcome current obstacles remains paramount as they approach the regular season. The spotlight will be on the offensive line and their capacity to provide a stable pocket, allowing the talent on the field to shine through amidst the preseason tumult. As Tomlin candidly put it, "That can't be a problem for us. We've got to be better than we were tonight in that area."
