As the New York Giants eye their playoff aspirations, all eyes are on Jalin Hyatt, the second-year wide receiver who has quickly become indispensable. Drafted in the third round out of Tennessee, Hyatt's journey from college standout to NFL game-changer is marked by relentless work ethic and a commitment to improvement.
A Dedicated Preparation
Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds, Hyatt has committed himself to gain weight ahead of the grueling demands of an NFL season. He understands that strength and durability are critical, especially for a wide receiver whose role demands not only speed and agility but the ability to withstand physical confrontations.
"It's definitely hard for myself (to gain weight). Some guys, it's easier for them to gain weight or gain muscle. For myself, it's harder. I burn a lot of calories quick. I'm just one of those guys that's got to just keep eating," Hyatt admits.
Nutritional Strategy
In a bid to add mass, Hyatt has turned to a somewhat unconventional source: Uncrustables, the frozen, individually wrapped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. For Hyatt, they have become a staple in his diet, helping him to supplement his caloric intake effectively.
"PB&J's was one of my biggest things, because you want to eat your full meal. You don't want to eat a little bit and drink a protein shake. Then you're not really getting anything. So, for myself, finishing, completing your full meals, and then, an hour later or 30 minutes later, that's when you put in an Uncrustables or a PB&J or a little protein shake," he explains.
Performance on the Field
Hyatt’s dedication has translated into impressive performances on the field. His ability to impact games has been evident, starting notably with a critical 58-yard reception that was pivotal in the Giants' narrow three-point victory over the Cardinals in Week 2 of the 2023 season.
As the season progressed, Hyatt showed consistency and playmaking ability. In Week 7, he recorded two catches for 75 yards, contributing significantly to New York's 14-7 win over the Commanders. These performances were a prelude to his breakout moment in Week 12, where Hyatt notched his first 100-yard receiving game in the NFL, playing an essential role in the Giants' tight victory over the Patriots.
Team Aspirations
While personal achievements are important, Hyatt's focus remains on the collective goals of the team. His drive is evident not just in his individual preparation, but in his vision for the Giants' success.
"For me, I always set high expectations. Just looking at our team, looking at what we got—for goals, I just want a team goal. We have a playoff team. That's what we want to do. That's our focus and we're gonna get there," Hyatt states with conviction.
Hyatt's journey is a testament to the blend of talent, hard work, and strategic preparation needed to excel in the NFL. As the Giants continue their push towards the playoffs, his contributions, both on and off the field, will be instrumental in their quest for success. His story is one of determination and resilience, traits that resonate strongly with the ethos of professional sports.
