CeeDee Lamb Rejoins Cowboys with a $136-Million Extension
Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has officially rejoined the Dallas Cowboys, bringing an end to a tense holdout with a lucrative four-year, $136-million contract extension. This deal not only secures his place in Dallas but also makes him among the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in the NFL. Tied with Nick Bosa, Lamb now boasts a $34 million average annual salary.
The terms of Lamb's extension include $100 million in guaranteed money and a sizeable $38 million signing bonus. Only Justin Jefferson tops his earnings among non-quarterbacks, with a $35 million average per year.
Throughout his holdout, Lamb missed all organized team activities, minicamp, and training camp in Oxnard, California. However, he stayed active, working out in Texas and South Florida, and added 15 pounds of muscle during this period. Despite being away from the team, Lamb maintained a strong connection with his teammates and coaches via his iPad and made a point to practice with quarterback Dak Prescott at Prescott's backyard field.
Returning to the Cowboys was a significant moment not only for Lamb but for the entire organization. The Ford Center buzzed with excitement as players and staff celebrated his comeback. Fellow Cowboys player Jalen Tolbert recounted hearing cheers when Lamb walked through, describing the moment as special for the team. "Everyone was like, 'Hey Cee[Dee].' Just having that moment with him after he got what he deserved. We know that he works hard for what he got. So it's special to see a guy like that," Tolbert stated.
Reflecting on the holdout, Lamb expressed his emotions candidly. "I had no doubt. But I will say I was getting impatient," he admitted. The process, filled with uncertainty, had its share of ups and downs. Lamb described the craziness of the negotiations, recounting how his agent FaceTimed him with some unsettling news before ultimately sealing the deal. "Well, where do I sign?" Lamb replied with eager anticipation.
Head coach Mike McCarthy emphasized that Lamb's role on the team will not change from last year. "CeeDee's role will not change. He was our premier receiver last year. Our approach with him will be similar. I don't see that changing," McCarthy explained. The focus now shifts entirely to the field, with Lamb ready to prove his worth further. "I've got some body armor on me. I can take a couple more hits. I'm prepared for my opportunities," Lamb confidently stated.
Lamb's connection with Dak Prescott remains a crucial element for the team's success. Throughout the holdout, they ensured they stayed in sync, frequently practicing together. "We got our reps in for sure. The best thing about it, him having a field in his backyard. So anytime I came back home [from training in Florida], it was time [to throw with Prescott]," Lamb shared.
Looking forward, Lamb has called for the extension of Prescott's contract, emphasizing its importance. "You look at our numbers together, they're at the top of the charts. I have no doubt that they're going to get a deal done. We all know that I want Dak here. Jerry wants Dak here, too, so let's just get this under control and kill the speculation and let's go win," Lamb stated, showing his confidence in the team's leadership and vision.
The holdout period was undoubtedly filled with anxiety for both the fans and the organization. Yet, the mutual respect and understanding between Lamb and the Cowboys' management ensured a positive resolution. "We had a businessman conversation. Just had to clear the room. Everything is behind us. I'm not worried about nothing. We got what we needed to get done. Now it's time for me to go ball," Lamb declared, signaling his readiness to focus solely on football.
As Lamb steps back onto the field, bolstered by his new contract and enhanced physical conditioning, the Cowboys expect him to continue being the standout performer he was last season. The renewed commitment from both sides paves the way for a promising future, with Lamb eager to contribute significantly to the team's success.
